Let me explain some of the choices. I followed BurdaStyle’s recommendation on using crepe-de-Chine as the shell fabric for one of the versions of the dress. However, I wanted it to have more body and a softer drape. Organza – the workhorse of underlinings – would be too stiff. Underlining with crepe-de-Chine would be better, but it would mostly add more weight. So, the next best choice was charmeuse. Susan confirmed my choice: “Charmeuse would be lovely as an underlining, and it can almost serve as a lining as well. Organza would be too stiff – unlike the charmeuse in drape and movement.”
Next was to determine what size to sew, this sewing pattern comes in sizes 48 – 56 (view the size chart here). If you are unfamiliar with men’s sizing and measuring on a man then take a men’s shirt that you (or they) like the fit of and measure the front and back sections and compare to the pattern! Since men’s patterns are usually quite straight and not shaped along the side seam this is easy to do. You can also measure the side seam length and shorten/lengthen the pattern from there. I’m making a size 50!

I have been shopping for fabric in downtown Los Angeles since I was a student at FIDM years ago. Unlike most neighborhoods in LA which are always being revamped, this little slice of the downtown area hasn’t changed much. It’s bordered by Skid Row, a rundown area on the north which has been cleaned up a bit by the new loft boom; industrial warehouses to the east; the Staples Center to the west; and the low budget knock-off shopping district known as “The Alley” on it’s southwest side. You can find the fabric district on South 9th Street between Wall and Maple streets, a small shops spill out into the surrounding streets that fall in between Maple and Wall.
