This is a trick I learned the same time as the Sewing Curves Trick, and I must say, it has saved me from some intense breakdowns. It seems almost impossible to make an inset piece with pointed edges fit into a larger concave piece, but with a handy little clip at the right place and time, you’ll be able to tackle this and many other sticky sewing situations! When I finished placing all of the fabric, I stepped back to see the image of my grandmother…it was amazing! But I was now faced with a new problem – I could see that the quilt needed really beautiful stitching. I was thinking freemotion quilting would be good, but unfortunately I did not have those skills!

I have been making a quilt from red and white fabrics and what better way to use up the scraps (which I always keep) than to use them on my card. I played around with the fabrics, cutting and placing them onto a piece of plain black wool until I was happy with the design. The next step was to sew each piece onto the wool using the different stitches on my sewing machine.
