This was a season of curious looks. From Marc Jacobs’ “too small” shoes and front-loaded heels, through the unraveled goth on Olivier Theyskens’ Nina Ricci runway, to Chanel’s stars ‘n’ stripes-denim collection, designers were testing out a broad array of (sometimes questionable) ideas for next Spring. In that context, the prevalence of sheer materials hardly merits a raised eyebrow. But then again, sheers were one of only a few big trends this season, and of those, easily the strangest. The very prevalence of see-through silks and chiffons demands its close inspection.
Creating a garment from a piece of cloth is what I love most about sewing. Through the years, I’ve sewn for a lot of famous individuals— not their total wardrobes but various items through the years. I’ve sewn for Duke Ellington, James Brown, Muhammad Ali, Jackie Robinson to name a few. Each has had their different styles and it was really great making them one of a kind pieces. I love giving people what they want and making them look good. I just love the artistry of sewing and tailoring all together. I currently have a really good client who wears vests— I’m a vest man myself. And in the past 15 months, I’ve made 120 vests for him. That’s pretty astounding! He’s my favorite client.

I also think it is important that one is aware aware of how hard this industry is and how much work it requires and having one’s own line does not make that any easier. That being said, for all young designers fresh out of school who want to have their own line…get some experience, follow your dreams and go for it! There are plenty of designers who DO make it out there…you just need to work hard, be extra creative and think outside the box!
