How did you start sewing?I began sewing in high school but didn’t start working with patterns until college after a few bad experiences turned me off from clothes sewing (who knew reading the pattern directions could be so helpful?). My favorite project in my studio so far is probably my Striped Tulip Skirt, not because it is especially intricate or a masterpiece but because it took me multiple attempts to get it right and I’m glad I stuck with the pattern and finally found a fabric that worked for it.
I didn’t want to use a cardigan or baggy pattern. For the inserts in the pattern I used some leftover black mesh fabric from my sultry Little Black Dress project. Using little scrap pieces of fabric in a new garment is such a great feeling!The only pattern alteration I did was make the hemline a ‘hi-lo’ style. So I shortened the center front by 1 1/2".

For the sleeve I put up my sample shirt to see the desired sleeve length and I made a mark on the pattern. I measured down from the underarm point to the mark and made another point along the other sleeve seam. I connected those points with a straight line and folded along this line. I used my tracing wheel and went over the sleeve seam to get the hem shape (
