What I love about using bias-cut fabric is that it won’t pucker when I hem the skirt like wide turned-up hems do (since the turned-up hem has a wider circumference than the point on the skirt you’re stitching it to — skirts generally narrow as you go up). This allowed me to use my sewing machine’s blind hem stitch rather than stitching by hand — this is a nearly five yard-wide hem after all!

Hi there BurdaStylers, April is National Serger Month! A couple of weeks ago in honour of this special month I first made a pair of spandex leggings, and for this serger project I made a cool T-shirt with a crochet fabric back (disclaimer: I did not crochet the back, I purchased it already crocheted). Let’s face it: for the guy who wants to sew his own clothes (or for women who want to sew menswear), there aren’t a whole lot of resources out there. In-print books like David Coffin’s classic, Shirtmaking, are few. I’ve been writing extensively about men’s sewing over on my blog, Male Pattern Boldness, and I’m delighted that BurdaStyle has given me the opportunity to address the topic here.
I’ve really enjoyed sewing this dress and feel like I my sewing mojo has finally returned. So far I have put the dress together up to (but not including) the zipper. This is the first time I have sewn piping and I must say I’m pretty darn proud of my first attempt. It was much easier than I expected it to be due to the fact that I had Benedikta’s tutorial to show me how to make the piping and this tutorial showing me how to sew it in.
