I was SO PLEASED last week once I finished sewing this skirt that I didn’t have any fitting alterations to do. I really do find with BurdaStyle skirt patterns i’m truly a size 38, just when it comes to tops and dresses I always seem to need alterations on those types of patterns around the shoulder and back. So once I realized the skirt fit perfectly the first time I could get to the fun stuff (embroidering, styling, and wearing around the house).
It is absolutely essential to make a few samples before you start sewing with the actual fabric! You don’t want to ruin your garment pieces before you even put them together. I didn’t own these tools when I was working on my lace blouse for the April couture challenge and the lace swatch I used for the sample was almost eaten up by the machine. So, I made the French seams by hand – another option if you don’t have these accessories. In fact, hand-sewn French seams have more give – and there are situations when you want to make use of it.

Interestingly, however, much of Thakoon’s show also showed a debt to last season’s laurelled Balenciaga collection, with its tribal prints, crested blazers, jodhpurs and robot shoes. Like a lot of designers, among them Philip Lim, Proenza Schouler and new kids Ohne Titel, Thakoon was playing with a lot of tribal notes for Spring, but joined them – Balenciaga-style – to a host of dissonant influences. Lim showed tribal necklaces with preppy gear; Proenza mixed a martial smartness with coolly African colors and textures, for a safari feel, and Ohne Titel gave bold, schematic prints a Stephen Sprouse paint job. (Neo-rave lives on, for now.)
